1. Structure & Cut: make sure the fit of your coat is right so that it does not gape in weird places. Depending on whether you want an oversize look or a more slimmer/fitted look will determine what kind of fit it will have on your body. For me, I like the oversized look, so in this case I would go up a size, but if you like a more tighter look then stick to your true size or one size down.
2. Material: Is the quality good? How long will this coat last? These questions are very important when deciding to invest in a coat. Remember quality over quantity. You might think your saving money by getting a cheaper quality coat, but in the grander scheme of things, your actually spending more since you would have to constantly replace your coat each year. Believe me, I would know.
3. Color: I always say when looking for a coat stick to basic colors ie. black, navy and grey first and then go wild with the other colors later. Basic colors can be worn all year round and never go out of season.
4. Cost: Better quality things will cost you a bit more money, but think of it as an investment. Your potentially investing on a coat that will last you for a long time. So save that $30 that you would have spent on a cheaper jacket and put that towards a good quality piece.
Here are some coats that I've found that are my personal favorite. Some of the fit screams oversize while others have a more structured look to it. Depending on your preference these might appeal to you. Let me know what you think.
